Why you should attend the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026
An article by Spencer Brown, Yacht Sales
Europe’s most exciting and glamorous boat show, and also the continent’s largest, is just 1 week away!
Yes, the show will open on 8 September and run until Sunday 13 September, and represents the biggest yachting event in the Mediterranean.
Expected to attract over 55,000 international visitors, it is also the natural launch pad for many new models, with over 700 boats on display plus over 650 exhibitors - it really is a global phenomenon in the yachting calendar, set in one of the most glamorous places on the planet.
Some interesting points about the show:
- Europe's In-Water Leader: It is recognised as the largest in-water boat show on the continent, transforming the French Riviera into the global capital of yachting for six days.
- Rich Maritime History: The iconic event is a long-standing tradition, having been first held in 1977.
- A Tale of Two Ports: The festival takes place across two distinct harbours: Vieux Port focuses primarily on new motor yachts, while Port Canto hosts sailing vessels, brokerage deals, tenders and water toys.
- Free Maritime Shuttles: Because the festival is split across the bay, organisers run a continuous fleet of free shuttle boats to ferry visitors back and forth between Vieux Port and Port Canto
- Massive Floating Fleet: The event consistently showcases over 700 boats ranging from compact 5-meter day cruisers to massive 50+metre superyachts.
- The Global Launchpad: It is the industry's premier stage for new releases, regularly hosting roughly 150 world premieres where shipyards debut their latest models to the public.
- The Power Cat Village: A brand new addition to the Vieux Port is a dedicated village entirely focused on luxury power catamarans ranging from 11 to over 28 meters in length.
- Sea Trials on the Riviera: Unlike static indoor exhibitions, select buyers can arrange direct, appointment-based sea trials to test the yachts live on the Mediterranean water.
- Eco-Friendly Innovation Route: The festival features an "Innovation Route" award system to highlight smart, eco-conscious maritime tech like 100% electric catamarans and artificial intelligence collision-prevention systems.
- Strict Size Regulations: To protect the boutique feel of the event, most yachts displayed inside the marinas are strictly under 500 Gross Tonnage (GT), forcing any larger mega-yachts to anchor out in the deeper bay.
To add to the glamour of Cannes, there are also various industry awards ceremonies that take place during the event:
- World Yachts Trophies Yachts France, which, following a gala dinner, hosts the Yachts Parade on Saturday 12 September in the bay of Cannes
- Innovation Route Awards - introduced by the show organisers, t highlight the industry’s transition toward sustainability and smart eco-tech,
- YachtBuyer Five Star Trophies and Hall of Fame induction - the yachting equivalent of the rock’n' roll world, highlighting production boats which have proven outstanding quality
- Something new - Art Vision Awards, which is a new spin-off that shows how the yachting lifestyle interacts with fine art. A special awards event will be held which will feature art and fashion set inside an art-influenced venue, bringing together artistry and luxury art collectors attending the festival
For France in particular, this event is a major landmark date in the business calendar, as the yachting industry is worth over 1 billion euros in France alone! Cannes Yachting Festival attracts manufacturers, brokers, representatives, journalists and business affiliates of the marine leisure industry, and most importantly the lifeblood of the industry, the Buyers!
Buyers attend the Cannes Yachting Festival from all over the world! Indeed, I myself have had visitors fly in from the Middle East, Far East and South America in the past - it is truly a colourful and cosmopolitan event! Cannes as a city is so well organised for this, with the right level of hotels across the Côte d’Azur, supporting infrastructure such as limousine companies, transport hubs like a heliport, easy road and train access and the best offerings of restaurants and entertainment!
On top of that, the Festival does ensure that there is the best opportunity for journalists, influencers and brokers to see, photograph, video and commentate on all that is wonderful about the marine leisure industry, whether that is new models, exciting waterways, new brands or simply the support service companies around this complicated business.
Top Tip for a Buyer: As always, Cannes never fails to impress, but as you can see from above, there is also a lot to get through!
